A time management plan in learning these problems may be helpful. Agree to give yourself a certain amount of time to complete a problem (30 minutes to an hour max). After time is up, go ahead and look at both Sam's solution (assuming he has one) and the solution provided by the faculty at UMD. An "I'm bound and determined to do this myself" attitude, which can sometimes be wonderful, can work against you here. Spending the 30 minutes or so trying to solve the problem will mean you have a good understanding of the problem by the time you see a solution, and will be ready (in the shortest time possible) to learn from seeing a solution.
In short order you will be solving similar problems within the alloted time completely on your own.
